Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman signed volume of his memoirs. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1886-87 second edition. Sherman signs the front free endpaper of volume I, ''Arthur O'Connor M.P. / With best compliments of / W.T. Sherman / General. / New York, Feb 23, 1888.'' The recipient, Arthur O'Connor, was an Irish politician and Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom. Complete in two volumes, Sherman documents his life with particular emphasis on the Civil War, where he served as Ulysses S. Grant's close ally, securing the city of Atlanta and spearheading the March to the Sea. With numerous folding maps and illustrative plates throughout. Bound in publisher's forest green boards with gilt lettering, each book measures 6.25'' x 8.75''. Volume I has been rebacked, retaining most of original cloth; some dampstaining and foxing within. Volume II is missing front free endpaper and copyright page. Overall in good plus condition.
