Hunter S. Thompson Letter Signed -- "…Kazinga. The zip is on. Got a call from my tambourine man agent tonight, saying we just cracked Random for $10,000…"
Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed, composed on 19 April 1966 just after receiving good news of a $10,000 contract from Random House. Letter to Thompson's friend Paul Semonin reads in part, "Kazinga. The zip is on. Got a call from my tambourine man agent tonight, saying we just cracked Random for $10,000. Not in a bundle, of course, but I get $2,000 to sign and that's enough to fuck around with…$3,000 for rewrite of Rum Diary and $7000 for as yet unspecified nonfiction book. Needless to say it's spaced out so I'll be poor until final delivery of the second book, at which point I get $4000 vacation money…I'm supposed to be going hard on the RD rewrite, not traveling…I have to get back here and whip on the machine. Write it all before they put me in a sedition camp. (FYI, just found out tonight Steve Decanio is serving 2 months in Santa Rita prison for his FSM [Free Speech Movement] action. All appeals failed and apparently he & other student types are being fed to the thugs while in jail…See you next week unless something blazes. [signed] H". Single page letter on bright orange stationery measures 8.5" x 11". Small split at one fold line, otherwise near fine condition.
