An incredible collection of 57 screen-worn costumes by Shirley Temple, Hollywood's most transcendent and bankable star during its Golden Age, including the four-years from 1935 through 1938 when Shirley was Hollywood's #1 box-office draw. This collection of screen-worn costumes spans the peak of her career, and includes her most memorable outfits: the folk dress and wooden shoes she wore in "Heidi", the wedding gown and hula costume from "Curly Top", riding costumes, pajamas, dresses and tap dancing outfits. Also included with these one-of-kind costumes is a collection of vintage promotional photos, featuring Shirley wearing the outfits. Costumes are in incredibly well-preserved condition, and display beautifully.

Lot includes:

Shirley as a 4 and 5-Year-Old, Just Before She Became America's Darling - 5 Costumes from 1932-33 "One Reelers" (short films) representing the start of the precocious young star's career, all with vintage photographs of Shirley wearing the costumes: (1) From "Pie-Covered Wagon", a fun sendoff of the 1923 silent film "The Covered Wagon" is a blue cotton blouse with pink polka dots. From the film "Glad Rags to Riches", an 11-minute one-reeler which features Shirley's first on-screen tap dance, two costumes are included, both hand-sewn by Shirley’s mother, Gertrude Temple: (2) Dance costume comprising a peach blouse and an original silver metallic diaper-style pants with oversized diaper pin. (3) Tap dance costume comprising a pink satin top and dressing robe of rose colored silk. (4) From "The Kid’s Last Fight" a two-piece outfit comprised of a silk blouse and black silk vest. (5) From "Kid in Hollywood", costume worn by Shirley in the cabaret-style spoof of Marlene Dietrich, featuring a black sequin over pink, sleeveless top and diaper-style pants with oversized diaper pin.

1934-1940 Shirley Rises to the Pinnacle of Hollywood Stardom - 52 Costumes:

(6) From "Now and Forever", where Shirley stars opposite Hollywood heavyweights Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard. Sheer peach chiffon dress is in near fine condition.

(7) From "The Little Colonel", co-starring Lionel Barrymore & Hattie McDaniel. Iconic silk taffeta dress and bonnet was worn during several memorable scenes in the 1935 film.

From "Curly Top", seven costumes for one of Shirley’s most cherished films: (8) Ivory silk satin dress worn in the dinner scene in which Shirley is comically given lessons on table manners by the butler. (9) One-piece pajama with four fluffy white pom-poms on top. (10) Pink silk pajamas with animal characters featured on top. (11) "Sweet Sixteen" party dress featured in the "When I Grow Up" scene in which young Shirley dreams about her adult life. (12) Cream colored wedding gown, including original wedding veil and fingerless lace gloves. (13) Hula costume featuring a multi-layered floor-length grass skirt with decorative flowers and woven waist band, along with lei, floral bracelets and floral coronet. (14) Daisy dress made of silk and decorated with flowers. The dress was a personal favorite of Shirley's.

From "Our Little Girl", four costumes from this classic film which co-stars Joel McCrea. (15) Blue linen dress worn by Shirley in the film's opening scene. (16) Powder blue and cream colored silk pom-pom dress. (17) Cream silk sateen "Alphabet" dress, also including an original framed costume sketch of proposed design for the costume. (18) "Musical Note" sundress, including original costume sketch by René Hubert.

From "Captain January" co-starring Buddy Ebsen. (19) Rose and peach silk dress worn by Shirley during "The Right Somebody to Love" sequence.

From "Dimples", two costumes from the cherished film co-starring Frank Morgan (The Wizard in "The Wizard of Oz"). (20) Pretty brown-print day dress with bonnet and brown cape. (21) Black taffeta best dress.

From "Poor Little Rich Girl", four costumes from the film which features stars Gloria Stuart and Jack Haley. (22) Navy blue, two-piece sailor-style uniform, worn by Shirley in her going away to school sequence of the film. (23) Blue silk dress with full-length box pleats, worn in film’s opening scene. (24) Yellow silk dress with brown short sleeves worn in the attempted kidnapping sequence. (25) Peach silk satin monogrammed pajamas.

From "Stowaway", five costumes from this Shanghai-set film, co-starring Robert Young and Alice Faye. (26) Aqua-blue silk satin pajamas. (27) Peach silk crepe dress, worn in the wedding scene. (28) Blue silk party dress, worn in a scene where Shirley exclaims, "I've never had a dress as nice as this." (29) Brown velvet dress worn during the film’s poignant divorce sequence. (30) Yellow linen dress, worn during Shirley's performance of "You've got to S-M-I-L-E to be H-A-P-P-Y". Included is a sunshade umbrella.

From "Heidi", six costumes from the film based on the classic Swiss story. (31) "In Our Little Wooden Shoes" signature costume includes the traditional folklore dress, two original petticoats, an original Dutch cap and wooden Dutch shoes with lambswool lining. Worn in the beloved scene where Shirley sings and dances to the musical tune "In Our Little Wooden Shoes". (32) Classic Swiss costume worn by Shirley in the film’s opening sequence, including the famous goat milking scene. (33) Red velvet coat, bonnet and boots worn during the winter sleigh ride sequence through Frankfurt. (34) Traditional country costume comprised of a white cotton blouse, black velvet vest, a wool skirt, red apron and leather shoes. (35) Blue woolen coat and woven hat worn in numerous scenes throughout the film. (36) Blue silk flowered dress and pinafore worn by Shirley in the scene where she encourages her sick friend to walk again.

From "Wee Willie Winkie", three costumes from the film helmed by legendary director John Ford. (37) Silk dress, flowered cotton pinafore, petticoat and wooden-handled parasol with owl’s head carved handle tip. (38) Uniform ensemble with helmet and leggings worn in various scenes in film. (39) Light blue cashmere dress.

From "Just Around the Corner", five costumes from the film co-starring Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Bert Lahr (the Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard of Oz"). (40) Equestrienne riding costume, custom-made for Shirley, comprising trousers, along with white shirt, vest, jacket and bowler hat. The costume was worn by Shirley in the opening scene of the film. (41) Brown silk dress with flower design and coat. (42) Navy blue silk dress worn in the tap dance and song sequence with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. (43) Blue jumper and blouse with heart design. (44) Blue woolen coat, worn by Shirley in the film’s opening sequence.

From "Little Miss Broadway", seven costumes from the film co-starring Jimmy Durante. (45) School uniform worn in opening scene at orphanage. (46) Blue woolen coat with collar, handkerchief and beret, worn in the film’s "We Should Be Together" sequence. (47) Aqua blue silk dress worn in scene where Shirley says goodbye to the children at the orphanage. (48) Light brown cashmere coat. (49) Red silk polka dot dress worn in first scene at the Hotel Variety. (50) Green silk crepe smocked dress. (51) Flowered print silk dress.

From "The Little Princess", four costumes from this magical film co-starring Cesar Romero. (52) Navy blue woolen one-piece school uniform. (53) Ragged black dress and worn boots, the outfit she is forced to wear when it is learned her father’s estate can not pay her school tuition. (54) Equestrienne costume worn in the film during horseback riding scenes. (55) Blue woolen coat with collar & muff and blue velvet bonnet, worn in film's opening scene.

From "The Blue Bird", two costumes from the 1940 Walter Lang directed film. (56) Folk-style costume comprising a white blouse, burgundy skirt, brown vest, apron, and a dark blue jacket, along with original leather shoes. The ensemble was worn by Shirley in the opening scenes. (57) Rich, crushed blue velvet gown.

Costumes are in very good plus to near fine condition, beautifully preserved. Paired with the photos, they recall Shirley's magical performances and her special cinematic ability to make everyone feel hopeful.

Each costume comes with a COA from Theriault’s auction house, directly from the Shirley Temple Estate.
