Bayard Rustin signed ''LIFE'' magazine from 6 September 1963 shortly after the ''March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom'' that was organized by Rustin and where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his rousing ''I Have a Dream'' speech. Rustin is featured on the cover of the magazine as one of the leaders of the march, inscribed to fellow nonviolent activist Gene Sharp: ''To Gene Sharp / with respect, / Bayard Rustin''.
Rustin was an important mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr., introducing him to the concept of nonviolent resistance as practiced by Mahatma Gandhi. The recipient, Gene Sharp, was likewise a pioneer in the philosophy of nonviolence; he was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize and is the founder of the Albert Einstein Institution which studies nonviolent resistance around the world. Magazine measures 10.5'' x 13.5''. Light wear, overall in very good plus condition.
