Admiral David D. Porter autograph letter signed during the Civil War with interesting content regarding his son's schooling, including sending him a double barrel gun if the school allows it. Written on 24 October 1863 during the Civil War, letter reads in part,

''I enclose...a check for 48.61...for clothing for my son Theodoric. I am glad to hear that he is pleased with the School and hope that I may have cause to be pleased with his progress. I will send him a double barrel gun if it is not against the rules of the School or academy will you please let me know...David D. Porter / U.S.N.''

Porter's son Theodoric would later become a U.S. Army officer KIA in the Mexican-American War at Matamoros. Letter measures 7.875'' x 9.875'', framed with an engraving of Porter to a size of 21.5'' x 16''. Not examined out of frame, but appears very good to near fine.
