Extremely rare Confederate slave appraisal document from the Civil War, dated 1 September 1864 from Charleston, South Carolina. Partly-printed document lists a slave named George, appraising him at $3,000 with the name of his owner, John Hall listed, and signed by representatives of the Confederate authorities, the state and the owner. The Confederacy conscripted slaves as forced labor during the Civil War for non-combat work such as defensive fortifications and munitions factory labor. Slaveholders were required to loan their slaves to the C.S.A., with this disturbing loan document serving as an appraisal should the slave become killed or injured.
Document reads, ''We have carefully examined the following named Slaves, furnished the Confederate Sates for service on the Coast - the property of John Hall, and estimate their value as follows:''. With docketing on verso from the York District, a county in South Carolina. Document measures 8.25'' x 5.875''. A few pieces of tape repair, overall in very good condition. An unsettling but important primary source slavery document from the Civil War.
