Herbert Hoover autograph letter signed, accepting a role on the Executive Committee for the 1915 World's Fair (the Panama-Pacific International Exposition), which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. Then an internationally known mining engineer, Hoover would go onto serve as an overseas agent for the Fair, persuading European countries to participate. His work for the Fair led to him serving as head of the Commission for Relief in Belgium beginning in 1914, which directly led to his oversight of the U.S. Food Administration during World War II. The Presidency followed shortly thereafter. Letter on ''Overland Limited'' railroad stationery, letter to banker John A. Stewart on 14 December (1912) reads in part,
''Dear Mr. Stewart I have for some time been greatly interested in your whole project particularly the phaze [sic] we discussed in co-operating with the Exposition and I should be very glad to accept your suggestion to join your executive committee. The whole matter is one more pregnant with results in fewer steps than any other put forward in recent years - / It seems to me also that a little tangible evidence of my interest might help pay for postage so I enclose a cheque to that end - / Kindly forgive this scrawl for this is not the smoothest road-bed in the U.S. Sincerely / H. C. Hoover.''
