James Madison and James Monroe signed four-language ship's papers during the War of 1812, authorizing ''The Hound'' under command of Robert Forrest to pass through international waters, with the schooner leaving Baltimore bound for St. Bart's carrying sundries ''as per manifest''. Commercial shipping during the War of 1812 was notoriously hazardous, as the British enforced a naval blockade along the Chesapeake at the time of this document, dated 17 May 1814. Four months later the port of Baltimore would be assaulted by the British during the Battle of Baltimore which effectively ended this blockade. Signed by Madison as President and by Monroe as Secretary of State. Measures 21.25'' x 16.5'' with two wax-based seals. Chipping to right side and faint haloing to portions of ink, overall very good plus condition.
