John Steinbeck typed letter signed in type, composed to his typist Mary Morgan on his personalized Sag Harbor stationery. Dated 4 May 1958, Steinbeck laments not having Morgan to type his correspondence and also confides troubles he's having with his sons. Letter reads in part, ''...It's hell having to keep up with my own coreresponedence. [sic]. I miss you for that among other things. And don't forget that I owe you a lot of money. / I've being visiting schools for the boys and I think have two good ones. But Cat is in complete revolt and if he doesn't mend his ways I wonder whether I can gete [sic] him into any school except reform school. I'm coming in on tuesday to see whether there is anything I can do to straighten him out. He is getting away with murder and doesn't give a darn about anything. Tom has been trying like a son of a gun, and doing pretty well for Tom but Cat has thrown in the sponge. It is going to take some doing to straighten him out if I can do it at all. His mother makes nothing but mistakes and I'm [not?] so sure I would be much better at it but at least I would be different...yours jn''. Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Near fine condition.
