Large photograph by Alexander Gardner from 7 July 1865 showing the death gallows of the men and woman who conspired to assassinate President Lincoln and his cabinet. Titled ''End of the Conspirators'', period albumen photograph measures 8.875'' x 6.625'', mounted to mat where details are handwritten, ''Execution of the Conspirators of President Lincoln / Jail Yard Washington D.C. July 7th 1865''. Also with their names underneath the photo, ''Mary E. Surratt, Payne, Harrold, Atzerott [sic]''.
Alexander Gardner was the only photographer allowed inside the Washington, DC jail yard that day, along with his assistant Timothy O'Sullivan. Gardner captured 10 photos of the execution but elected not to include them in his ''Photographic Sketchbook of the Civil War'', selling them individually instead. Few sold on their own however, making their appearance today very scarce. Mat measures 12'' x 10'' with contact sheet of an unknown man on verso. Some chipping to mat and moderate fading to photo. Very good condition.
