John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore document signed from 1769 shortly before he served as Governor of New York and Virginia. As Virginia Governor, Lord Dunmore is important for his issuance of Dunmore's Proclamation in 1775, offering freedom to slaves who enlisted with him against the American patriots. Although over 1,000 slaves joined his call to enlist, the act was so controversial that Dunmore fled the colonies for Great Britain, leaving most of these enslaved people behind. Vellum document measures 10.125'' x 6.75'' with red wax seal. Some toning to right side, small square cut out at upper left and incisions made around seal. Mounting remnants to verso. Very good condition.
