Yale University Kiphuth Award, given to tennis legend Arthur Ashe on 10 February 1983. By this teim, Ashe had begun to transition his superstar tennis career into the realm of public service, becoming an advocate of many social issues after suffering from a heart attack in 1979, which forced him into retirement. The Yale Kiphuth award is one of the University's most prestigious honors, presented to athletes who are distinguished in the fields of physical training, sport, sports writing, physiology, literature and the arts. Bronze medal depicts the bust of Yale swim coach Robert Kiphuth with ''Kiphuth Fellow / Yale University'' engraved around the border. Verso of medal reads ''Lux et Veritas'' and ''Arthur R. Ashe, Jr. / February 10, 1983'' with a book engraved above it. Measures 2.5'' in diameter with minor tarnishing throughout, else very good condition. With an LOA from Ashe's widow.
