Major General Harry Schmidt, Commanding General of the Fifth Amphibious Corps during the Battle of Iwo Jima, typed letter signed from 17 April 1945. Schmidt writes to a Mr. Sanquist, ''...It is very gratifying to know how strongly the people are behind the marines in the pacific...[signed] H Schmidt''. Letter was signed less than one month after the victory in Iwo Jima. Document measures 7.25'' x 10.5'' with slight soiling, toning and two punch holes atop. Overall in very good condition. Part of original envelope included.
