Screen legend Joan Bennett custom-made costume possibly worn in the 1939 film "Man in the Iron Mask", the first film version of the famous Alexandre Dumas novel. Bennett transitioned from the silent film era of Hollywood to the talkies, starring in over 70 films in her career. Bennett played "Princess Maria Theresa" in the film, Louis XIV's first wife. Coral and white-striped long-sleeve gown has lace at sleeves and decolletage, as well as a maroon velvet ribbon running along neck and cuffs of sleeves. Striped coral sheer fabric overlays a white polyester lining underneath. Original tag safety-pinned to sleeve reads: "Inv. 36847 / Joan Bennett Man in the Iron Mask". Measures 14" shoulder to shoulder and 58" in length. Gown's zipper along back is slightly stuck to fabric though can be expertly maneuvered by a tailor to not cause damage. Very good condition. With a Gene London Costume Collection COA.
