Japanese flag given to WWII soldier ''Hoshino'' as he embarked upon warfare. Written in black around the burning red sun in Japanese: ''Destroy the private, contribute to the public'', ''Be brave for country'', ''Hard fight'' and ''Keep it up''. Though a popular symbol during the war, the Japanese flag today is quite controversial with many believing it denotes extreme nationalism. Made of synthetic, silk-like material, flag measures approximately 34'' x 27''. In very good condition with light soiling and small holes and tears throughout.
