Queen Victoria signs the top of a patent document dated 7 January 1846. Nearly a decade into Victoria's reign as Queen, George Howell files the document to protect his metalworking process. In part: ''...he is...Inventor of Coating with a Metal the surface of articles formed of copper or copper alloys or iron whether wrought or cast...'' An imprinted seal to the left margin reads: ''One Pound / Ten Shillings''. A stamped seal bearing crown insignia and marked ''London'' is dated 24 April 1846. Partially printed 3pp. document on card-style stationery measures 8'' x 12.5''. Faint soiling and creasing. Very good.
