The epitome of Noel Coward's witticism and style: a cocktail shaker personally gifted to his godson, David Niven, Jr., son of the famous actor and Coward's close friend, David Niven. Sterling silver cocktail shaker is engraved with a poem composed by Coward:
"Because my Godson Dear, I rather
Think you'll grow up like your father
My gift is this and with it given
A toast: fine health to Master Niven
May all gay things on you be showered
To-day and always / Noel Coward"
One of the most clever playwrights of the 20th century, "Time" magazine declared in 1969, "Coward’s greatest single gift has not been writing or composing, not acting or directing, but projecting a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise", perfectly evidenced in this cocktail shaker. Back side of shaker has Niven Jr.'s name and birthdate engraved. Various silver marks appear on the body, top and cap, including the walking lion, anchor, "H&H" and "P". Base of shaker is also engraved "3462 / 1 1/2 PINT". Measures 9" high and 2.5" in diameter at the base. A few small dents, not distracting from presentation. Overall in very good condition.
