One of the earliest maps of the entire world from the Golden Age of Cartography, published in 1587 by prominent Dutch cartographer Abraham Ortelius. Founder of the Dutch School of Cartography, Ortelius was the first to publish a modern atlas, ''Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'' (Theatre of the World), from which this remarkably accurate map of the entire world originates. Dated 1587 at mid-lower right, hand-colored copper engraving measuring 21'' x 16.25''. Reinforcement to vertical fold line at bottom, pencil mark at lower mid-right, lower margin slightly trimmed. Small closed tear at upper left and minor chipping to edges. Overall in very good plus condition.
