Audrey Hepburn autograph letter signed, with fantastic content regarding the role of Natasha Rostova in ''War and Peace'', one of Hepburn's most acclaimed performances. Dated 5 April 1955, Hepburn writes to actor Anthony Quayle who, at the time, directed the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. It appears that Quayle was recruiting Hepburn to play the part of Cordelia in ''King Lear'' which Hepburn regretfully turns down due to scheduling conflicts filming ''War and Peace''. Composed in green fountain pen on Villa Suvretta stationery (a hotel in St. Moritz where Hepburn often stayed), letter reads in full,
''My Dear Tony / At last our plans are made and final. The relief is collossal [sic] and we are so happy. We are to play Natasha and Andrei in War & Peace this summer in Rome, they are such lovely (although difficult) parts and we are thrilled. Just one regret; I will not be able to play 'Cordelia'! I really had hoped to be able to, it would have been such a wonderful opportunity for me. I am really sorry, and have also written so to Sir John.
Dear Tony we are so grateful to you for a number of things, but even more Mel and I feel curiosly [sic] happy and invigorated by having met you, we find you rather rare. Please come and spend some time with us this summer, you'll never see a place more heavanly [sic], it's yours anytime. Love from us both Audrey''.
Two page letter on two sheets of onion skin stationery measures 8.25'' x 11.75''. Minor chipping to edges, overall in very good plus condition.
