James K. Polk Military Appointment Signed as President -- Dated June 1846 During the Mexican-American War

James K. Polk military appointment signed as President, tapping Samuel M. Rutherford as Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain. Dated 27 June 1846 just after the start of the Mexican-American War as the United States fortified its military. Vellum document measures 13.625'' x 17.5'' with intact wax seal and bold signature by Polk. Countersigned by Secretary of War William L. Marcy. A few small holes at horizontal fold and mounting remnants to verso, overall near fine condition with unusually bright and well-preserved vellum.
