Porcelain china dinner plate from the James K. Polk White House in 1846, the first White House china to feature the shield of the United States, with the national motto ''E. Pluribus Unum'' upon a ribbon over the shield. The shield of the U.S. was adopted in 1782 at the same time as the Great Seal of the United States, and predates the use of the U.S. flag on White House china by 15 years. Plate also features molded scrollwork in gilt along the rim as well as a gilt motif at center. With Edouard Honore manufacturer's mark to reverse as called for. Also with common incision of ''1901 Ch'' on reverse, believed to be the time when the pieces were appraised. Measures 9.675'' in diameter. Small nick to rim, camouflaged by scrollwork, and nick to underside over mark. Minor discoloration and some rubbing to gilt. Very good condition.
