Albert Einstein typed letter signed with additional handwritten postscript, extending his ''heartfelt thanks'' for sending a book he wanted to read. Dated 14 June 1933 from Christ Church, Oxford, Einstein writes to L.S. Hearnshaw, whom he met after giving the Herbert Spencer Lecture at Oxford on 10 June 1933, titled ''On the Method of Theoretical Physics''. Not having left Oxford yet, Einstein here asks Mr. Hearnshaw to send him a book written by his father regarding Herbert Spencer, a Victorian era biologist and sociologist who coined the phrase, ''survival of the fittest''.
Signed ''A. Einstein'' at the conclusion, Einstein then handwrites a postscript in German, translated to ''The interesting book has already arrived. My heartfelt thanks for it.'' At this time, Einstein was living in Belgium, having fled Germany after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor earlier in 1933. Single page letter measures 7.875'' x 9.875''. Folds and foxing, overall very good condition. Accompanied by letter by previous owner, who elaborates on the history of the letter.
