John Tyler autograph letter signed, helping a friend gain access to the President for the purpose of securing a midshipman's warrant for his son. Writing from Williamsburg on 21 December 1838 to Virginia Senator William Henry Roane, the future President writes in part, ''I feel, in common with his father...a strong desire that his son Master Thomas Jones should receive a midshipman's warrant...May I request your aid in this matter - My advice to Mr. Jones is he take his son on to Washington and let him in his own person, make application to the President - This can be done through your kind intercession, and from my knowledge of you, I doubt not your readiness to gratify the boy - His family is highly reputable and influential...John Tyler''.
