Stephen Sewall document signed in ink ''Stephen Sewall'' as recorder for Essex County, thirty years after he served as Clerk in the Court of ''Oyer & Terminer'' in Salem Town, site of the most notorious of the ''Salem Witch Trials''. Lethal paranoia, accusations and trials swept three additional towns in colonial Massachusetts during the year of 1692-93, during which nineteen people were ultimately executed for witchcraft. Single-page handwritten partial document is dated 1723 and names Samuel Aborne and George Dalandis as parties to a contract, likely a sale of land. Measures 9'' x 7''. Contemporary pencil notations to bottom edge; minor separation to folds at top edge, scattered pinholes and an irregularly trimmed right edge. Overall very good, near fine given age.
